Daily Write-Up 01/05/2016

I wanted to give my thoughts today on the new-ish Palomino Blackwings Volumes subscription service now that we are 3/4 of the way done with the first year.

  1. I really love the designs. They are a fun alternative to the standard Blackwing finishes. I know a lot of people really loved the 211’s, but I really liked the 1138 (Star Wars Pencil!) and the 725’s as well (my guitar that I really need to learn how to play is that color!). However, I’m not sure that the designs alone are enough to keep me interested enough to renew.
  2. The extras are nice but, to be fair, they are not a game changer for me. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do with the print and the cedar slat from the 211’s keeps getting moved around my office. Still not sure what I’m going to do with that.
  3. The cores. Now, I’m still fairly new to this whole pencil thing. I mean, I’m no Johnny, Andy or Tim. I like a pencil that retains a point but lays down a dark line (which is why the Palomino Golden Bear remains my favorite).  I like all of the main Blackwing cores but if all this is, as the Erasable gang discussed in episode 42 is the main cores rotated, I’m not sure I’m in for more. Now, if they decided to do one with the Palomino HB core or the Golden Bear core or the Prospector core …

Right now, I’m really on the fence if I will renew my subscription or not. I feel the same way about the Field Notes Colors edition. The thrill of the mystery box is wearing off a bit for me personally, I’m afraid. I don’t dislike the pencils, but I want a little more variety if I’m going to renew. We’ll see how the Spring 2016 edition looks and if there is any variation.
